LushOne synth like you've never seen it ...
I've always been drawn to the LushOne, but seeing this on the LushOne blog makes it worse! Although I don't think I could build a stand like that.
Musikmesse 2014: Tascam (3)
Now these were the best things I saw from Tascam. I've seen their previous versions, but when you're up close and can handle them these are just lovely. Beautifully made and a joy to hold, and so small too. I thought I'd include the headphones in the top photo just to give an idea of scale.

Phoenix Studio comes to Android
Well I didn't see that coming! Phoenix Studio returns from the long lost land of Windows Mobile and is now with us once again on Android, and apparently coming to iOS too. What next I wonder? Griff coming back? Bhajis Loops even! No probably not.
Even so, it's great to see an app that's been around so long come back again, and a huge thank you to Musical Android for posting this.
So, Audiobus 2 is nearly upon us

Update on the new app coming from Mr HumbleTUNE ... (or not)
Update on the apple review, they require additional time…
— Erik [unknown] (@humbleTUNE) March 27, 2014
I have to ask myself why that is? What can they be doing? Perhaps they're just having so much fun with it that they don't want to let any of us in on it!
My developer of the week is ...
Holderness Media, for being so fast out the gate with Audiobus 2 state saving on their great apps:
Echo Pad (just updated with save state (AB2) and MIDI)
Swoopster
And Stereo Designer - Stereo Shaper and Mid/Side Processor
All great apps from a great and very forward thinking developer. If you don't know these apps then it's well worth taking a look.

Reminder: The Mutable Trusted Builder list
I've posted about this before, but it's worth restating as it's a very handy resource if you'd like to get into DIY synths but are put off by the fact that you don't have all the skills for actually building the stuff. So I wanted to make people aware of the Trusted Builders list on the Mutable Instruments forum. The trusted builders are people who are skilled at making Shruthis or other mutable instruments kits. So if you're interested in getting a kit made but either might struggle to make it yourself or just don't have the time, you should check out this list, and my personal favourite on the list is Paul (who happens to be an old friend, but is also an excellent builder).
MultiTrack DAW 3.4 arrives with Audiobus Save State, IAA and much more
This just made me smile this morning as MultiTrack DAW was one of my favourite recorder apps for a very long time, and after ages has had a fantastic update. Here's all the new stuff in version 3.4:
* IAA effects currently support only 1 instance at a time, system wide. In other words, you can't chain the same effect more than once.
- Inter-App Audio - effects can be chained on each track, on the Bus return, and the Master out (*).
- IAA Generators - on the Input to each track.
- Audiobus 2.0 - Can be used as a sender for any track or master out. Supports saving and restoring state.
- New graphics for iOS 7 - improved look is cleaner and less confusing.
- Clean waveforms - rendered without blockies on retina displays.
- 64-bit support - with Neon optimizations and high resolution audio processing.
- Dithering - applied automatically anywhere in the signal chain when bit width gets reduced.
- Reduced filespace usage - up to 16 tracks before caches kick in on 64 bit devices.
- Compressor - new dB reduction meter help you adjust threshold and ratio controls.
- Completely rewritten audio engine - takes advantage of the best features of your hardware.
- Supports up to 16 inputs simultaneously (USB hardware required).
- Loop Points - changing loop points in realtime is now immediate.
- Snapping - now you can snap to other regions, loop markers, and punch points, as well as Ruler lines.
- Snap helpers - red vertical lines display exact snapping placement.
- Song Menu - you can now drag song icons to reorder them.
- IN Meter - now displays up to 8 input VU meters on iPad, or 4 on iPhone/iPod touch.
* IAA effects currently support only 1 instance at a time, system wide. In other words, you can't chain the same effect more than once.
Mosaik arrives, and the intro price is 1/8th of the normal price
Yep, for real. I didn't expect it to be this cheap from day one either. Here's the details:
What is Mosaik?
You can import samples into Mosaik using AudioPaste, iTunes file sharing or the devices iPod library. To extract beat information out of the imported audio and to align it onto a global pattern, the App is using a beat detection algorithm which starts right after you have imported a sample or song. With this been done, you can warp through your audio, change its playing speed and set loops.
The time-stretching algorithm and how it works is the special feature in here. Instead of using an existing library we took a different approach. Our engine is taking care of beats. This means that Mosaik is trying to preserve the attack and decay phases of your audio. We call that "BSOLA" which means: "Beat Synchronous Overlap Add".
Current Project Status
When developing an audio application, starting from scratch is hard work. And in the case of Mosaik, it has been a lot harder than we thought. Therefore we have currently no other option than to release Mosaik in it's very early stage of development but at the lowest possible price tag - **$0.99 / €0,89**
Since the development still continues and since new features like user definable warp-markers or multiple tracks are about to be released in the next update, this is an opportunity to get Mosaik at one eighth of the price it will be sold for when the next update hits the store.
This major update will definitely include the following things:
- Audiobus support with input/output.
- Real-Time audio recording.
- Note Onset-Detections
- User definable and moveable warp-markers. This will add elastic audio features to Mosaik.
- Multiple Tracks of up to 16 playing simultaneous, arranged in a grid of multiple sample cells.
- Improved audio quality.
What's you fav app and what do you want from it?
So, which app is keeping you busy right now and what would you really like to see it get updated with? What's the feature you really want to see? Comment it in and here.
Musikmesse 2014: Saying hello to EUMLab
It was great to meet up with the guys from EUMLab at Musikmesse this year. Of the 2000 or so exhibitors at the show this year they were one of the few iOS app only booths. For me that made them stand out if there products didn't do so already, and they do.
If you don't know EUMLab they make a range of great apps for you iDevice:
Pro Metronome - Beat with Sound and Light
iUke - Ukulele Song Book
Guitar Toolkit - Tuner, Metronome, Scales, Chords and Progressions
Ukulele Toolkit - Tuner, Metronome and Chord Diagrams
Actually that isn't even a complete list, they make more apps than that, but I'm only going to focus on a couple for now, Pro Metronome and Ukulele Toolkit.
When I visited their stand Shawn from EUMLab took me through both of these apps. Now, generally speaking I wouldn't really go for these kinds of apps. You've probably noticed that as I generally don't mention metronomes and guitar tuner apps or similar. However, I've made an exception for both of these apps as I actually think they're pretty special and worth mentioning.
Shawn took me through their Pro Metronome app which has just loads of features in it, too many to mention here to be fair to the app and to EUMLab. In fact the same is true of Ukulele Toolkit which was of special interest to me as an occasional Ukulele player.
It was great to see an app only booth at the show and I wish EUMLab all the best with their apps. You'll be hearing more about them I'm sure, and not just from me.

Musikmesse 2014: Say hello to the Anode
The meeblip anode is a lovely little machine, and when I say little I mean small. It's tiny, but it doesn't sound tiny at all.
Musikmesse 2014: Numark Orbit
It's possibly a little unfair to give a view on this device, especially as I wasn't actually able to play with it at all, just handled it. All I can say is it felt very light in my hand.
E&C Arduino day workshops sold out, but visitor passes available
All the workshops are sold out for the Elephant and Castle Arduino day, but you can still get a visitor pass if you want to look in.
What's your workflow?
Everyone has a different workflow and a different way of working and getting the sounds you want. So what's yours? How about sharing it and explaining why it works for you? Just get in touch (check the 'about' page) and tell me all about your workflow.
Musikmesse 2014: Great to see Sonoma Wire Works at the show
Having known Sonoma Wire Works for some years now it was great to meet them all for the first time face to face at Musikmesse.
Sonoma have been doing really cool things with the iPhone and the iPad from the very earliest days of iOS (before it was called iOS of course) and are continuing to do so as well. They launched the very first 4 track recorder for iOS, called, FourTrack (app store link), and the first iPad 8 track too, called StudioTrack (app store link). If that wasn't enough, they launched a great range of drum apps called the InstantDrummer series, were one of the main forces behind the original AudioCopy initiative and brought us the original GuitarJack, am immensely high quality iPhone audio interface before these things had really entered anyone else's head.
So, in my view, they're a pretty impressive force, and they've contributed a great deal to the iOS music making world. So it was great to meet Sonoma Wire Works and chat about what's coming next. Of course, as you can imagine, I can't say much about their future plans, but I can say that there's some great things coming from this long time support of the mobile musician.
And it's great to see Sonoma's hardware on display at Musikmesse. From where they started with the original GuitarJack and the Tayor EQ and GuitarTone apps, things have come a long way indeed. They're on the third iteration of the GuitarJack, the new GuitarJack USB model and it's just as good if not better than the previous too. You'll be hearing more from me about it in good time. As you can see there are some new versions of their hardware, Guitar Jack Stage.
Here's Daniel talking about it:
Of course I can't mention Sonoma Wire Works without saying that they turned 11 years old this year! Congratulations, and here's to many more years of innovation in both software and hardware.
