GrooveStep DS running under Android on a Nexus 7

A little video of me running The old DS homebrew sequencer GrooveStep app under nds4Droid on a Nexus 7. It runs surprisingly well.

Very useful post from iOS Musician on backing up to iCloud

Well worth a read to save your files and avoid the pain of all that creative work being lost.

You can read the post here.

Something to look forward to in 2013

From this comment from Alex on this post:

Ashley, i agree with you. Pixilang IDE would be cool. It is already in the list of requests for future Pixilang updates :)

Now that'll be amazing!

Final reminder: Last chance for Korg apps at 50% off

Ok, this is your last reminder! It's the last day to get the iMS-20, both iElectribes, iKaossilator, and of course the new iPolysix at 50% off. It all ends by the end of 2012 so don't leave it too late and miss out.

iPad Synth Guitar with ION All-Star Guitar

Brian's description of the video:

Just made a quick custom controller app to use ION All-Star Guitar to control iOS synth apps. Apps used: ThumbJam, Audiobus, JamUp (for delay & reverb effects), MIDI Bridge, custom controller app for All-Star Guiar (supporting velocity, aftertouch, mod wheel, pitch bending)

A huge thank you to Alex, developer of Sunvox

As I've known of Alex's work since before Sunvox, when he was making things for Palm OS and Windows Mobile it is wonderful to see how people have enjoyed his apps on iOS and on Android too now. The world of NightRadio is truly cross platform.

So a big thank you to Alex for being a part of the mobile music advent calendar this year and I hope that Sunvox and his other apps go from strength to strength in 2013.

80's Reflections by steviee8 on iPolysix

The very aptly titled "80's reflections". It is very 80's.

KORG iPolysix - KORG INC.

A big thank you to Sonosaurus LLC

Who are the makers of ThumbJam and DrumJam too. A thank you for being part of our mobile music advent calendar this year and for being so generous with promo codes for both of these excellent apps.

Thumbjam remains as one of my all time favourite apps for iOS and just gets better and better in my opinion. Here's to a great 2013 for both apps.

Extremely rare Chimera bC9 synth on eBay

It is expensive though at £300, but then it's a collector's item and there won't be any new ones of these coming out.

orbit ( progressive) by Groov2 on iPolysix

Another minimal track but again I enjoyed this one. It has a good feel to it and I like the bass sound especially.

One final mention of Bhajis Loops for 2012

I couldn't let New Year's Eve go without mentioning one of my all time favourite apps, Bhajis Loops.

I last mentioned both Bhajis Loops and Microbe as part of my 24 apps of 2012 (although there may only have been 23). Both of these are still completely free although you can't use either of these on iOS (there is an emulator for jailbroken devices) you'd have to invest a modest sum in an old Pam Tungsten T3 from eBay or a Palm Tungsten TX. Well worth it in my opinion!

Of course I secretly (although not so secretly now as I'm about to tell you all) still hold out the tiniest of hopes that Bhajis will somehow come to iOS, or even Android! But of course this won't happen.

Perhaps next year I might make some videos to convince people of the music making abilities of Bhajis. Who knows.

Finally, if you're interested, I've put out a couple of unfinished collections of pieces which were both made using Bhajis which you can find on Bandcamp if you're interested. But I still maintain that Bhajis is one of the best ever mobile music applications. iOS is getting close, but it isn't quite there as yet in some ways.

A very minimal track on the iPolysix, but I enjoyed this.

Looking for a recommendation for a Ukulele app

As I've not had a Ukulele before I've not had to look for a handy app for tuning, chords etc, so if anyone can recommend one that would be great.

MIDI Pattern Sequencer submitted to the app store

Just got to wait for it to get approved now! No idea on pricing as yet though. When I know I'll post about it.

Droneo gets on the Audiobus

Another app adopts Audiobus. This time Droneo from Henry Lowengard, maker of a number of fine iOS music making applications.

"Droneo is a synthesizer which drones with various timbres and precise intonations that blur the distinction between tones, timbres and chords."

It's certainly an interesting app and one of the more unusual apps to be added to the Audiobus stable. Personally, I hope to see a lot more like it in 2013.

Bits and Pieces from Ugo Capeto

If you like your music on the DS side then have a listen to this set of reworked pieces from Ugo Capeto who's been making DS music for quite some time now.

What I need is something like ViziBasic for PixiLang

Wouldn't that be awesome? If you're wondering what on earth I'm talking about then don't worry. I'm not going mad.

ViziBasic was (is) a visual editor for a BASIC language for the Palm OS. It let you create apps for Palm OS on the device, including compiling them. So wouldn't it be amazing if you could have something like that for iOS or probably more likely for Android that could be used with PixiLang which has some awesome sound generating possibilities.

Just a thought. Alex, if you're reading this, what do you think?

A little reminder for developers

Take a quick look at the developers page, it might be useful to you.

A big thank you to Oliver Wittchow, developer of Nanoloop

A big thank you to Oliver Wittchow who's Nanoloop for iOS and for Android was on sale as part of our mobile music advent calendar. It's an excellent application and a truly cross platform one as well.

So a big thanks to Oliver Wittchow. May Nanoloop got from strength to strength in 2013.

Caelestis arrives for your iPad and it's free

Caelestis is a unique, sample based generative music app that creates sounds with bouncing balls. Three shapes on the screen are used as 'rooms' that contain a sound. Different coloured balls can be thrown around inside these rooms, generating notes when one collides with a side. Using different combinations of balls and sounds, all kinds of beautiful performances can be achieved.

Features:
  • Three rooms, with up to three balls at one time per room.
  • Each room can be spun around to change the path of the balls inside.
  • Balls added and removed easily by dragging or tapping in the middle of each room.
  • Four different ball colours.
  • Speed control for the balls.
  • Pitch control using the built in keyboard, octave control using the different coloured balls.
  • Delay and Reverb FX.
  • A mixer unit, allowing volume and FX control over each room.
  • 30 presets in three categories: Tuned, Abstract and Percussive.
  • Import your own samples into the app via Audio Paste. Audio can be re-pitched by up to 12 semitones. Please note that only WAV and MP3 are supported formats.
  • Record your performances and export them via Audio Copy
  • Please note that Audio Copy and Paste is only available after a paid upgrade.

OP-1 EP by thewholeheart: woods walking

From the OhPeeWon forum:

Wanted to share a short 5 song freak-folk experiment using only the OP-1 4 track. The songs are very improvisational and are meant to explore the immediacy and playfulness of the OP-1. It's a free download and will be available for a limited time as I will take them off my sound cloud in a week. :)

Not really indicative of OP-1 stuff, but interesting to think that this was made on the OP-1.

Rediscovering the SS25: Nanostudio

I'm always amazed at just how good NanoStudio is. In the process of rediscovering the SS25 I fired up Nanostudio and was amazed to find how responsive it was in the SS25.
