Interesting places to make music
In a hammock, up a tree, about three years ago. I was going over some old photos and found this one.
Are you ready Girl (Sunrizer Remix) by ACSY
Track description:
I have only played a bit with the Sunrizer Synth. Here, the following is formed. All sounds (except Bassdrum and Clap) are made with the Sunrizer Synth App for the Apple iPad. All sounds made by myself. No Standard presets used. Only used some Standard reverb effect from Cubase and Sidechain.

Say hello to Synergy Studio from 4Pockets
Another fabulous app from 4Pockets arrives today. I've been playing with this for a while now and I really love it. It feels so intuitive.
Here's the whole description:
Synergy Studio is a sequencer that enables music creation by all musical abilities. By simply tapping on the grid interface users can lay down a series of notes and patterns of up to 64 notes to create a musical sequence.
If you are a seasoned musician looking for a tool to help lay down new ideas or need more advanced features then Synergy has the lot, a fully integrated mixer, lots of plug-in effects, complete customization of instruments and patches and extensive automation facilities.
If you want to experiment more, you can add multiple layers to your patterns by selecting different instruments for each layer. As you build up your layers you can create intricate musical patterns. By switching to the fully integrated mixer and effects options you can take your patterns to a professional level.
There are four main instrument categories to choose from: Drums, Analogue Synthesizer, Sample and Pad Synth. Each category contains different types of instruments - for example in the drum kit category you can choose from an array of different kits including Analogue T9, Orchestra, Rock and Techno. Further instrument packs are available in the Synergy’s free sound library or as In-App purchases.
Synergy includes MIDI implementation enabling you to interact with MIDI hardware, such as Synths and Samplers creating a powerful live tool.
Musicians can share projects with other iOS devices using Bluetooth technology. Simply select the WIST function located at the top of the screen to seamlessly connect with other iPad to share tracks and projects with one another.
Exporting your finished songs and patterns from Synergy is just as easy with built in functionality for Dropbox, SoundCloud, Email, Pasteboard or exports directly into other apps such as Meteor Multitrack Recorder.
Although Synergy will run on the iPad 1, to get the full benefit we recommend an iPad 2 or later.
Synergy Studio is from 4PocketsAudio.com, the creators of Meteor Multi-Track recorder and StompBox guitar effects rack, which featured in Apple’s iPad 2 TV commercial in January 2012.
- Choose your pattern length from 16, 32 and 64 notes.
- 11 Drum Kits, 42 Analogue Synth instruments, 55 Sampler instruments, 21 Pad Synth instruments.
- Further instruments available from free Sound library and in-App purchases.
- Edit existing instruments to create new ones and save them to use again.
- Easily connect and interact with other MIDI controls.
- Fully integrated mixer and effects unit available.
- 3 BAND Parametric EQ on each of the 16 layers to control the tonal content of a layer.
- Automate panning, fading and effects using the mixer.
- Export and share to other iOS devices via Bluetooth, Pasteboard, SoundCloud, DropBox, Email and FTP.

Today is the last day of Movember. A huge thank you to all who've supported this in whatever way.
If you know what Movember is about then I don't need to explain very much, if you don't, then read on.
During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces in the UK and around the world. The aim of which is to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and testicular cancer.
So, if you'd like to support these causes and make a donation, please head over to my Movember page. Your support is most welcome, and if you visit you'll see my current facial progress too!
Finally, I'd also like to say a big thank you to Jessie at Yonac for their very generous donation.

Stylo-101 (Stylophone+SH-101) arrives
I like the idea of this, I'll reserve judgement on the app until later.
Here's the description:
I-phone 5 friendly! What do you get if you cross a Stylophone with the famous Roland SH-101? Well We have circuit-bent a virtual Stylophone and added Roland SH-101 modifications. You can create wacky and eerie sounds to meaty bass lines. As well as the Stylophone sound, you now have an extra oscillator driving a sawtooth wave with filter and resonance from the SH-101. You can adjust the mixer for each oscillator and the LFO can control oscillators and amp. We have increased the LFO speed and depth of the pitch modulation. We have also added an SH-101 style sequencer for creating bass lines or arpeggios. It is still monophonic but the notes will continue to decay if you release your finger before playing another key. You can also play over the top of the sequence while its playing.
- 2 oscillator monophonic synth
- oscillator 1: saw, tri, square
- oscillator 2: SH-101 Saw with SH-101 filter, SH-101 resonance (4 preset levels) and detune
- LFO-pitch
- LFO-AMP
- Master Transpose
- Mixer for osc1 and osc2
- Arp/sequencer with tempo
- Release controls notes played and sequencer
- Attack controls notes only

Monostudio looks fun, but I don't have XP
For Monotron users out there this may be of interest.
Monostudio enriches the sonic palette of the already extremely versatile Korg Monotron analogue ribbon synthesizer.
Full details at the Monostudio site.
Via iDesignSound on twitter.
Interesting Android stuff over at Superfort
I posted about the Android app SuperSynth the other day (or week), but the developer's site is worth a look to with a number of interesting projects on the go.
Thought I'd mention it.

LFA iPad Orchestra plays Meeting in the Aisle
The Laptop Orchestra of Lake Forest Academy plays Radiohead's "Meeting in the Isle" as they open their Fall 2012 concert. 8 musicians play and project iPads on sound panels behind them while using a combination of apps including Animoog, iMS-20, iElectribe, Reactable, and Garageband. The Laptop Orchestra is held as a class within the Fine and Performing Arts department alongside Orchestra and Choir. 2012 marks its 3rd year as a class and 6th year as a part of Lake Forest Academy student life.
LFA iPad Orchestra plays Hello Meow Squarepusher
Lake Forest Academy Laptop Orchestra plays Squarepusher's "Hello Meow" during the Fall 2012 All School Concert. Members of the ensemble play iPads running various iOS performance/production apps including Animoog, iElectribe, iMS-20, Reactable, and Garageband. The 2 center players have synced their iPads using Korg's WIST protocol via iMS-20. The rest are playing free hand. Laptop Orchestra is offered as a class through the Fine and Performing Arts department alongside Orchestra and Choir and is a part of the school's electronic music program. Other courses include Electronic Music 1, Advanced Studies/Composition in Electronic Music, and independent studies.
LFA iPad Orchestra plays Reactable original
Lake Forest Academy's Laptop Orchestra (ostensibly an iPad orchestra for this concert) plays an original piece using the Reactable app for iOS. 8 iPad players modify sound objects in real time as they attempt to create an original sonic landscape based on the Varese/Cage idea that sounds should "react" to one another rather than simply form relationships (ie intervals, metrical patterns). This is the second piece played during the Fall 2012 All School Concert at Lake Forest Academy (an independent school north of Chicago). Laptop Orchestra is offered as a performance class alongside Orchestra and Choir and is a part of the school's Fine and Performing Arts department.

Figure goes universal and more!
Great news from Propellerheads this morning. An update for Figure and it's come to your iPad! Here's what's new:
- Universal - Adapted for iPad and iPhone 5
- Legato notes - Create tied notes in the pattern by drawing finger right on Rhythm wheel, then up/down
- Clear all function - clear a whole track with one tap
- VU meters in mixer
- New translation (Russian and chinese)
- Choose language in Settings
MIDI is 30 years old!
Happy birthday to MIDI. I can't believe it's 30, but then 30 is that kind of age isn't it, just kind of sneaks up on you.

Sprak thoughts
For some reason it doesn't work for me anymore, and I know I'm not alone in that. But it set me thinking about where Sprak could have evolved. Maybe a sprak modular? I like the idea of things circuit bent or broken in a software context. I suppose from that point of view it is fitting that the app doesn't work anymore.
Even so, I love the idea of Sprak and if it worked I'd still use it.
In GlitchBreaks Beta: Dynamic Glitch
There's a toggle in the current GlitchBreaks beta called 'Dynamic Glitch' that turns off the glitch pads' playhead repositioning feature. As you can see in the above video, when I slid my finger across the glitch pad, the playhead remained in the same starting location. This makes it much easier to use the pads because you don't have to keep your finger completely still while touching the pad.
Via iOS Musician.
Whenever I see this I'm still amazed
If you've never seen Four Seasons on an idevice it really is worth taking a look although I'm not sure it's on the app store anymore.

Not much longer before WretchUp funding closes
If you were planning to fund the Mouse on Mar WretchUp project then you have but a few hours left to do it.

ReBirth for iPad gets a surprise update
Well to be fair it shouldn't be a big surprise, but either way it's very welcome indeed. Here's what's new:
- Duo Mode - flip instruments around and jam with a friend on the same iPad
- MIDI sync - sync ReBirth to your DAW, MIDI hardware or other apps
- Background mode - keep ReBirth playing in the background when slaved to other apps
- SoundCloud Sharing - share your ReBirth music on SoundCloud
- iTunes export - export your track to iTunes on your computer
- Various bug fixes and performance enhancements
TC-11 Multi-Touch Synthesizer updated
TC-11 Multi-Touch Synthesizer gets another great update. Here's what's new:
- 16 new patches, including the 'Frets' layout which mimics a guitar
- new number keypad patch value entry
- new waveform select buttons
- larger interface elements
- settings / patch layout glitches
- minor audio glitches fixed
- load / save crash fixed
I hadn't touched this in ages
And it's still really quite good. The interface is lovely and futuristic and the sound is great. I don't know why they don't have it on the app store anymore.
