Why don't iOS versions have animal names?

I was thinking about all of the speculation over the possibility of a new OSX next week on the 20th and I started to wonder why it is that iOS doesn't have names for it's versions. Ok, they wouldn't be big cats, but why not smaller animals?

You could have iOS3 as Hamster, iOS4 as Gerbil, and maybe iOS5 as Guinea Pig?

Perhaps Apple couldn't think of a good series of animals for iOS so didn't bother, but I think it would be kind of fun to have them named.

Should be insects; Hornet, Dragonfly, Firefly, Yellowjacket, Wasp etc.

Not a fan of the animal names for OS versions -- I can never remember which corresponds to which number.
